Managed Services Backup Solution

Backups are one of the most overlooked aspects of any Access Control or Video Surveillance system. We all place trust in these systems to control and monitor our facilities but often forget to ask the question, “What happens if my system goes down due to an unrecoverable failure?” or “How long can we afford to have our system down?”.

Recently, an organization experienced one of these “Act of God” failures after applying routine Windows Updates to their system. Through the process of system recovery, it quickly became evident that many assumptions were made by multiple parties regarding the backup and recovery strategy in place at the facility. The enterprise scale facility was unable to monitor or control the Access Control and Video Surveillance system for over 10 hours while the system was partially recovered and for 4 hours the following day while the full rebuild of the system using the partially backed up data occurred.

At M3T Corporation we like to take a proactive approach in all we do, including evaluating our client’s systems for areas of improvement. The time to realize that an inadequate backup strategy is in place is not while reacting to a system failure. Many of our client’s systems are controlled and managed by IT with the individual responsible for the Access Control and Video Surveillance systems in place at the facility having very little knowledge of what IT has implemented for backup and recovery of their system.

Conversely, IT may not know the extent of what the system does for the facilities or how to make sure it is backed up properly. We urge all or our clients to open a line of communication with their IT departments and begin discussions regarding how their systems are currently backed up, how quickly a Bare-metal recovery can be executed and what the proper procedure is for initiating a high priority ticket with their IT services. Knowing realistic response times and the most effective procedure for escalating a system failure is imperative when writing an effective internal procedure. Please feel free to engage M3T if you need assistance with these discussions or writing an effective recovery procedure.
