Keeping Security Programs Relevant

Times are forever changing and as we all know we have to keep up with those changes. Security programs are no exception to that.

Most think of cybersecurity that is always in need of updating. We are all exposed to our technology devices reminding us to update.

What about our physical security programs?

It’s easier to identify areas that need updating as certain events may occur in our society. We undoubtedly learn from the bad decisions of others who want to harm property or people. We put in place countermeasures constantly to get ahead of the criminal knowledge curve.

Sometimes we have to use what our guts are telling us as we start to see and feel certain trends of activity. In return, we can post greater security measures to counteract such acts.

We have come far in this area and have learned much from the past.

Certain events like 9/11/2001, various and countless school shootings, public shootings, bombings to mention a few have shaped our security posture. Airports look much different than they did 20 years ago.

Who would have thought about having to scan our children for them to feel safe to go to school to learn?

We’re at the point where we may not feel safe if we can just walk into a facility without any friction from a security source whether it be human or systems.

Why? Because that means anyone who wants to harm can also access the building.

We as a society will always have much to learn and must always be vigilant. That is at the core of what security is.

Being alert to take action on someone or something that wants to inflict harm onto another. Once the guard has dropped, it is the perfect time for the fox to enter the chicken house.

As long as we stay on high alert and evaluate how we handle a security crisis, or more importantly what countermeasures we have in place to avoid one, we’ll always be at our best to react to save property but more importantly, lives.
